Mistress of the dog lover's mystery, Susan Conant is a seven-time winner of the Dog Writers Association of America's coveted Maxwell Award. She has chronicled the adventures of dog writer and dog trainer Holly Winter and her Alaskan malamutes since 1990.
When Sire and Damn opens, it's a hot August in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Holly's unexpectedly pregnant friend Rita is about to marry the pretentious Quinn Youngman. As Rita's and Quinn's variously and hilariously eccentric, hostile, duplicitous, kleptomaniacal, and pistol-packing relatives gather for the wedding, deceit is ubiquitous.
Fibbing, cheating, and pilfering are one thing. Killing is another! Even a burglar deserves to live, doesn't he? But how can Holly tell truth from lies when no one's word is good? No human word, that is. Dogs don't lie, especially Holly's own bold and fearless Rowdy and psychiatric service dog Izzy, the most charming Labrador retriever ever to bound out of the pages of fiction and leap into the hearts of readers everywhere.
An intriguing mystery and a novel of family relationships, Sire and Damn is above all else a dog story told with authenticity and wit. Dog lovers, come, sit, stay!
Sire and Damn Dog Lover Mysteries Book 20 eBook Susan Conant
I'm guessing this is Conant's last Holly Winter mystery; this is one of the two I accidentally found last year while looking for another book. The cast of characters is kind of confusing, so here's the handy guide: Holly is married to Steve Delaney the vet, of course; her dad Buck and stepmother Gabrielle appear briefly at the end (Holly's cousin Leah and one of her malemutes, Kimi, are offstage). The majority of the plot concerns Holly's friend and former tenant Rita's upcoming wedding, marrying Quinn Youngman, who saved Kimi's life in the last book. Quinn's parents, MaryJo and Monty, are coming to the wedding, as are Rita's mother Erica and father Al (who arrive late in the book); staying with Holly is Rita's cousin Zara and her psychiatric service dog Izzy, also on hand is Zara's vituperous mother Vicky (Erica's sister, hence Rita's aunt) who is married to Dave (who isn't in on the action) and also Uncle Oscar (Vicky and Erica's uncle) is staying with Rita. Also there is Rita and Zara's cousin John. Got that all now?Anyway, the first odd thing that happens is that someone tries to swipe Izzy while Zara is walking her. Then, while most of the family is at a nearby restaurant, someone breaks into Rita's house and takes her little Scottie Willie, but he's found the very next day. Unfortunately, a bloody fireplace poker is also lying in the room where Rita and Quinn were keeping their wedding gifts. The person who was hit with the poker is soon found in the Charles River, a smalltime crook named Frankie Sorenson.
And then someone does indeed steal Izzy. But what does it all mean? Why would someone steal a shelter dog? And who caught the burglar in the act and...acted? Sure, Uncle Oscar was home, but Monty took a long time in the men's room and both Vicky and Zara went back to Rita's house during dinner and John didn't come at all.
All I can say is that I know why Rita became a psychiatrist and Zara needs a psychiatric dog with this bunch of nutcase relatives. The family wangling is more convoluted than the mystery plot, and there are enough shenanigans to make Freud run away screaming. It's nice to have Holly and her wonderful dogs back for one more performance, but the mystery lacks in this one.

Sire and Damn Dog Lover Mysteries Book 20 eBook Susan Conant Reviews
Who in the world reads mysteries whose main characters are dogs? Apparently many people like this genre--given the number of books that come up on when I clicked on this one. I love anything canine. But this book is better than the average dog book. The family scenes are brilliant and hilarious. The depiction of the bride's and groom's various family members and the implicit and explicit family dramas evident in the characters themselves and their relationships set this book apart from the other great Susan Conant mysteries and set it above most other dog mysteries. Enjoy.
I just adore these dog mysteries by Susan Conant. How I wish I could write about my own beagles the way she writes about her malamutes... (sigh). I love how she captures their personalities & makes the presence of the dogs an integral part of the story, but the story is not ABOUT the dogs. It's very enjoyable.
I love the Holly Winter series and have read all of them. The main characters are likeable and enjoyable to follow as they mature and experience life. They're not stuck in time. I learn about different dog breeds and related subjects so the books are a dog lover's delight. This one introduced a psychiatric therapy dog, a new subject. Rita's unexpected pregnancy, impending wedding and assorted relatives, complications and mystery made it a very satisfying read.
I have been reading these Mysteries for years and have really enjoyed them because I love dogs, and participate in most of the dog related activities referenced in the stories. I hadn't read the last few, though and have been trying to catch up. I'm 2/3 of the way through Sire and Damn and I'm wondering if it is just me or is Conant throwing more references to god and the bible and christianity in general into her stories? I have a reading rule that if a book causes me to roll my eyes or sigh out loud too often, i just quit reading it. We're almost there!
It has been quite a while since the last Holly Winter (Dog Lover's Series) book came out. This one came out in 2015, and I'm only getting to it now because of a constant backlog of library books! This time the "crime" seems not to be a crime, at least to me. But it doesn't matter, because this book is really about families. The old saying about not being able to pick your relatives is true, and shown here in all its glory. In particular, upstairs neighbor Rita's relatives. The occasion is Rita's marriage to Quinn, and all of her immediate relatives have gathered in Cambridge. Some crazy relatives may indeed put the "fun" in dysfunctional, but not this group. Somehow, in between all the drama and tension, Holly must manage to get Rita and Quinn to the altar, find lost dogs, keep all the relatives from killing each other, and unravel the mystery of who killed the burglar.
I enjoyed getting to spend some time with characters I had thought would be no more. Holly and Steve's dogs are all here again, although this time they are mostly background to the story, with a newcomer taking front and center, a Lab serving as a service dog.
The last “Dog Lover’s Mystery”, Book 19 in the series, was copyrighted in 2011. This newest entry is copyrighted 2015. Conant’s fans have been waiting with their tongues hanging out to find out what happened next to Holly, Steve, Rita, Leah, Kevin and, especially, Rowdy, Kimi, Sammy, India, Lady, Willie and Tracker.
They won’t be disappointed. All their old friends are here, taking up their lives where they left off. The characters, human and canine, are as three-dimensional as in the earlier books. The intertwining of Rita and Quinn’s wedding, their families’ eccentricities, a burglary and, of course, the dogs is handled with Conant’s familiar deft hand.
A good read, may it be followed by many more.
