Jakob Hansen, a knight in service to King Christian II of Denmark and Norway for fifteen years, is being sent to Barcelona, Spain as the king's representative at the 1519 gathering of The Order of the Golden Fleece. On the way, he delivers a gift for England's two-year-old Princess Mary, daughter of young Henry VIII - and meets the enigmatic Lady Avery Albergar, the "Ice Maiden" of Queen Catherine's court. While Jakob is pressed into keeping Henry's secrets, it becomes clear that Lady Avery has some dark secrets of her own.

A Nordic Knight in Henry Court Jakob Avery Book 1 The Hansen Series Jakob Avery edition by Kris Tualla Romance eBooks

As with all the books in the Hansen Family series, this historical suspenseful romance does not disappoint. It is not absolutely necessary to have read other books by the author in order for the story to flow. However, it is worth noting this is book one of a duet, so this volume is best read first. Ms. Tualla's attention to historical detail is very much appreciated. Her characters never make the mistake of using modern-day slang, they dress in period-appropriate clothing, and they are believable. She writes in such a way that I felt I was in the room with the characters.

The two main characters in this book are Sir Jakob Hansen, a knight from Norway, and Lady Avery Albergar, of Toledo, Spain, who meet each other in King Henry VIII's court in England, in 1518. Jakob is on his way to the Order of the Golden Fleece, which begins in January of 1519, and he stops to spend time with King Henry VIII to pave the way for good relations between Denmark and Norway, on behalf of King Christian II. Jakob and Avery do not like each other upon first meeting. Throughout the course of the story, things between them change and they become good friends, but since this is the first volume of two, there is no HEA for these two at the end of part one.

King Henry VIII presses Jakob into service for himself, asking Jakob to assist him with some subterfuge. This is accomplished at great risk for Jakob, but he does manage to extricate himself from King Henry VIII's court in order to make his way to the Order of the Golden Fleece in time for its beginning.

The secondary characters, from King Henry VIII (no offense to the real sovereign, however, in this book he really *is* a secondary character), Queen Catherine, Jakob's fellow knight Sir Percival Bethington, and even his valet, Askel, all had a part to play in the story; they were more than mere window-dressing to the tale. I appreciated it, since again, it made the story so very real.

The story was well-planned, believable, hair-raising, and fulfilling to read. I was drawn in and kept up past my bedtime finishing this book! A definite recommend!

A Nordic Knight in Henry Court Jakob Avery Book 1 The Hansen Series Jakob Avery edition by Kris Tualla Romance eBooks Reviews

I had the good fortune of meeting Kris at an author event hosted by a local art walk. Her charisma and passion for history were immediately apparent, leading to an interesting and entertaining conversation. These characteristics also shine through in her writing.

This first installment of this two-part series is the quintessential historical fiction. Kris seamlessly blends historical facts with rich and entertaining storytelling. Not only is the Tudor period accurately portrayed, but the characters also have depth and realism. Their humanity, with all its beauty, faults, and uncertainty, is one of the best features of the book. Rarely have I seen an author depict conversations and interactions among characters with such nuanced attention to body language and emotional expression. I felt as if I was present in every moment, laughing at each comical jest and feeling as if I was intruding on intimate moments.

I immediately began reading the second part of the series. The story continues to intrigue and entertain. Already, new secrets have been revealed as the story unfolds and there is a good sense of an impending conclusion.
The story meandered a bit, and I found myself wondering when the second book would end (it's essentially one book broken into two volumes). This wasn't my favorite by Ms. Tualla (although I did find Jakob intriguing), but I think she's a talented author and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
The plot in the 2 books is interesting, the characters have depth, the historical context feels right, love scenes are not crudely graphic, but evocative and sensitive. I read both of them in one go, it was so captivating. A light read, it nonetheless gives a very good taste of the times described. Recommended!
